Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow

Prior to Wednesday night I hadn’t had my hair cut by a professional for at least two years.  Maybe even longer.  Which is a shame for the simple fact that getting your hair shampooed at a salon is one of the best things ever.  I don’t know why but it’s just fantastic.  There’s just something about having someone else wash your hair…  Anyway, I’ve been cutting (and washing) my own hair for a long time and was content to continue doing so.  However, my mom very generously offered to treat me to a trip to the hair salon and I decided that sounded pretty fantastic.

Prior to 6 p.m. Wednesday evening, my hair looked a little like this:

It was long.  Really long.  It didn’t really have a style and was maybe a little boring.  For the most part I was okay with that but the ends were starting to tangle more and more and all that hair loss that occurred between three and six months post partum has left me with a non-so-delightful fuzzy halo of new hair growth.  It needed a little help.

All day Wednesday I thought about how I was going to get it cut.  Was I going to keep all the length and just trim as much as necessary?  Was I going to go for the old stand-by of long layers?  Was I going to try something new?  I really didn’t know but I was starting to think maybe I would do something a little drastic.

When I sat down in the stylist’s chair, I asked her just how short my hair would be if I were to cut off 10 inches.  10 inches.  I knew that was the minimum length Locks of Love would accept for a hair donation.  The stylist indicated that my hair would still be, at the very least, shoulder length.  So, I decided to go for it!

And now my hair looks like this:

Just a little bit different!

This is the second time I have made a hair donation to Locks of Love, which is a non-profit that provides hair pieces to financially disadvantaged children who are living with long-term medical hair loss.  Knowing that I could help such a great cause made the decision to cut all my hair off an easy one.

I’m still getting used to having so much less hair but, as the weather here gets warmer and warmer, I think I am going to appreciate not having such a weighty sheath of hair.  It feels so light and fresh!  And it’s still long enough to pull back in a little ponytail for running. I made sure to emphasize to the stylist that being able to pull it back was a must!

Have you ever donated to Locks of Love or a similar organization?  Would you consider it?
